Take Up Your Cross
Lent 2 - February 28 , 2021
Mark 8:27-38
Zoom service
As We Gather:
* Why do “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray”?
* What plans did you have for 2020 that didn’t work out as expected?
* How much confidence do you have in plans for 2021?
Entering God’s Presence:
P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son+, and of the Holy Spirit;
C: Amen.
P: Our help is in the name of the LORD
C: who made heaven and earth
P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.
P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and
receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar,
let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that
we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from
our sinful condition. Together, as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite
mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and
saying: God, be merciful to me a sinner.
C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to ever-
lasting life. Amen.
P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your
children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly
forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst,
enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son,
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.
First Reading: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 God’s promises to Abraham
When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”
Second Reading: Romans 5:1-11 Justification by faith alone
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Gospel Reading: Mark 8:27-38 God’s plan of salvation And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from
the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand
of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to
judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Message: Cross-training Mark 8
We Respond to God (prayers)
P: Let us pray for….Lord, in your mercy;
C: Hear our prayer
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
We Depart God's House
P: Let us bless the Lord
C: Thanks be to God.
The Benediction is spoken
The announcements are made
Closing Song: In the Cross of Christ I Glory (spoken)
In the cross of Christ I glory, tow’ring o’er the wrecks of time
All the light of sacred story gathers ‘round its head sublime.
When the woes of life o’ertake me, hopes deceive and fears annoy
Never shall the cross forsake me; lo, it glows with peace and joy.
When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way,
From the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day.
Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified;
Peace is there that knows no measure, joys which through all time abide.
